Purse seine fishing
- Coastal states like Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala etc have imposed a ban on purse seine fishing practice which not only draw in the target fish but also at high risk turtle varieties too, on which Central Government has raised objection in Supreme Court of India.
- Purse seine fishing is a method of fishing that involves the use of large, circular net that is suspended in the water by a series of floats and weight. The net is kept open at the bottom by a series of rings or brails, and is closed at the top by a line called the purse line.
- It can be an effective method of fishing, but it can also have negative impacts on marine ecosystems and other species if not carefully managed.
