The term “Dark patter” was first coined by Harry Brignull on 28th July, 2010 when he launched darkpatterns.org, a repository of documents that exposes deceptive user interface.
What is Dark pattern ?
Dark pattern is an interface that has been specifically designed to trick users into taking an action that they might not otherwise have taken. It is often used by companies to influence their user behaviour in a way that benefit their company rather than users.
It can be found in variety of offline and online contexts like websites, mobile apps, and physical products etc. This is often used to encourage user to make purchase, signup for recurring bills, and disclose personal informations.
It is consider unethical because they manipulate their users without their knowledge and consent.
Types of Dark patter
Privacy Zuckering : It is named after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. It involves tricking their user to share more information than they intended to and user give up their info unknowingly.
Forced continuity : This pattern involves making it difficult or impossible for users to cancel a service or subscription.
Bait and switch : This pattern advertise a free service or product that are either not available at all or available only in limited quantities.
Hidden fees or charges : This pattern involves hiding fees or charges until after a user has taken an action.
Roach motel : This design allows for easy entry for users but makes it difficult to exit. For example, charging fees or penalties for canceling or make it difficult for users to access their account or delete their account.
Negative consequence of Dark patter
Financial loss : Signing up for services that they don’t need.
Damage to reputation : Divulging personal information that users don’t want to share that may damage their reputation.
Increase trust deficit : Users may loose trust in websites or companies that deceive or manipulate their users.
Legal consequences : It may cause legal consequences for the companies that uses dark pattern practice.
Tips for avoiding Dark patter
Read terms and conditions carefully : Before joining a service reads its term carefully.
Use privacy enhanced tools : Use browser extensions or other tools that can protect your privacy online like ad blockers.
Use strong and unique passwords : For all your online accounts with two factors authentication whenever possible.
Be cautious before clicking a link : These links are designed to trick user to steal their personal informations. It is better to stay away from malicious websites.
Stay vigilant : Always be aware of any unusual activity on your account, and report any suspicious activity to relevant party.
