Show Answer
Correct Answer: (D)
Why this question?
- Recently, the Prime Minister of India rolled out E20 fuel at India Energy Week 2023.
- The Government has set the target to reach 20% ethanol blended fuel by 2025.
What is E20 Fuel?
- It is a blend motor fuel containing 20% ethanol (ethyl alcohol) which is 99% pure with petrol.
Pros of E20 fuel:
- More cost-effective compared to other fuels.
- It produces lesser greenhouse gases, hence more environmentally friendly.
- Help to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels and reduces import bill.
- It contributes to generating employment in ethanol industries by increasing its demand.
- Enable local farmers to participate in the energy economy and helps to raise their income.
Cons of E20 fuel:
- Diversion of food resources for the production of ethanol.
- In the distillation process, fossil fuels are used as a source of energy emitting greenhouse gases.
- Lower availability of food products causes spikes in food prices.
- Pure ethanol is hard to vaporize which makes the vehicle with blended fuel hard to start in colder conditions.
Government initiative to promote ethanol-blended fuel
- Proposed additional differential excise duty on unblinded fuel in Budget 2022-23.
- Interest subvention scheme for grain-based distilleries.
- Implementation of the Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme in which OMCs sell up to 10% ethanol blended fuel.
2. Consider the following statements regarding the National Industrial Corridor Programme (NICP):

What is Strike-slip fault?
- It is a fault line between two pieces of rocks that move parallel but in opposite directions to each other.
- It is caused by the build-up of stress called shearing stress which is released when two rocks slide past one other.
What is Strike-slip Earthquake?
- In the Strike-slip fault regions, rough surfaces prevent the rocks from moving, causing the build-up of extreme amounts of energy. Eventually, the blocks slip and move past one another, releasing a sudden large amount of energy, causing earthquakes to occur.
