AGNI-5 Nuclear capable ballistic missile has been successfully test fired by Strategic Force Command (SFC) from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. AGNI-5, an intercontinental ballistic missile has undergone several successful test launches and is an important part of India’s strategic deterrence. It is one of the most advance missile in India’s arsenal and strategically enhances the country’s strategic capability.

About AGNI-5 Missile

  • It is surface-to-surface nuclear capable ballistic missile developed indigenously by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation).
  • AGNI Missiles are developed under Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP).
  • AGNI-5 uses three-stage solid fuel engine.
  • It can be launched from variety of platforms including road-mobile launcher and naval ships.
  • Agni-5 has range of more than 5000 km and is capable of reaching most part of China and Europe.

AGNI Missiles Series

  • AGNI-I is a medium range ballistic missile with a range of 700-800 km.
  • AGNI-II is also a medium range ballistic missile with a range of more than 2000 km.
  • AGNI-III is an Inter-Medium range ballistic missile with a range of more than 2500 km.
  • AGNI-IV is an Inter-Medium range ballistic missile with a range of more than 3500 km and can be fired from road mobile launcher.
  • AGNI-V is an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile with a range of over 5000 km.
  • AGNI-VI Is an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile with a range of around 11000-12000 km, is under development stage.

Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP)

  • IGMDP launched by Government of India in 1983 to produce a range of missile to significantly enhance India’s military capability and ended in 2008. This programme was headed by former India’s President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
  • Missiles developed under this programme
    • AGNI : a medium to long range ballistic missile for nuclear deterrence.
    • Prithvi : a short-range surface-to-surface missile for tactical nuclear and conventional warfare.
    • Trishul : a short-range surface-to-air missile for air defence.
    • Akash : a medium-range surface-to-air missile for air defence.
