  • Recently, a 3-membered committee appointed by the Supreme Court of India has published a “Report on Protecting Great Indian Bustard from overhead power lines”.
  • Recommendations given in the report:
    • Birds diverter should be installed on the power lines that work like reflectors and are visible to flying birds 50m away.

Background story

  • In 2021, Supreme Court directed the power companies that all the low-voltage power lines should be demarcated as “Priority and Potential Habitats of Great Indian Bustard (GIB)” in the Thar and Katch deserts of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
  • But State Governments did not comply with the directives given that shifting overhead power lines underground is expensive and impractical.

About Great Indian Bustard (GIB)

  • It is endemic to the Indian subcontinent and its highest population is in Rajasthan.
  • It prefers Arid and Semi-arid grasslands with thorn scrub and tall grass interspersed with cultivation.
  • IUCN Status – Critically Endangered
  • Protected under Schedule-I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 and Appendix I of CITES.

    • It will help to prevent erosion and help stabilize the coastal ecosystem.
    • It will also help India achieve NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) to create an additional sink of approximately 2.5-3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2030.

What is Saltpan land?

  • It is a naturally forming expanse of land covered with salt and other minerals.
  • It forms due to the evaporation of water in a lake/pond/river.
