Lumpi-ProVacInd

Lumpi-ProVacInd is a live attenuated vaccine for the prevention of Lumpi Skin Diseases (LSD) in cattle. It has been jointly developed by ICAR’s National Research Centre on Equines at Hisar (Haryana) and Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) at Izatnagar (UP).
About Lumpi-ProVacInd
- It is a homologous live-attenuated LSD Vaccine.
- It is used for the prophylactic immunization of animals to provide a defense mechanism against devastating Lumpi skin diseases.
- It is stored at 40 C and must be used within a few hours after reconstitution.
- In studies, it has been found that it is 100% effective for the prevention of the LSD virus.
- It will be commercially launched in early 2023.
What is Lumpi Skin Diseases (LSD)?
- LSD is an infectious disease caused by a virus of the family Poxviridae.
- It mainly affects cattle and does not affect humans.
- It is characterized by large fever, nodules on the skin, and mucous membranes, causing permanent damage to the skin and lowering its commercial value.
- It often results in chronic disability, reduced milk production, infertility, abortion, and ultimately death.
- LSD is transmitted by blood-feeding insects or parasites such as flies, ticks, lice, wasps and mosquitoes.
- It was initially found in south and eastern Africa and in the 2000s, it spread to several countries in the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe.

Lumpi Skin Disease Epidemic in India
- In 2022, over 97000 cattle died due to the LSD outbreak in India.
- It was initially started in the state of Gujarat and Rajasthan and later it spread to 15 other states.
- The Goat pox vaccine has been found to be effective and is being administered.
Cattles in India
As per 20th Livestock Census in 2019, total number of cattles in the country is found to be 192.49 million, rank 2nd in world’s cattle population.
It plays an important role in Indian economy. It serves farmers in varius ways like culture, food, social security, income, employment and gender equity etc.
